Nature in Virtual Worlds: Digital Environmental Humanities
[sic] – a journal of literature, culture and literary translation invites submissions for the upcoming December issue.
Deadline: September 1st, 2025
The field of Digital Environmental Humanities (DEH) is rapidly expanding, exploring the intersections of technology, ecology, and human experience in virtual and digital spaces. As concerns over environmental degradation grow, the role of digital technologies in shaping our understanding of nature has never been more critical. This special issue of SIC Journal seeks to explore the dynamic relationship between digital environments, ecological thought, and environmental narratives.
We invite scholars from across the humanities and sciences to submit original contributions that explore the ways in which virtual and digital worlds engage with issues of nature, ecology, and environmental justice. Topics may include (but are not limited to):
Virtual landscapes and ecological representation: How are virtual worlds representing, simulating, or intervening in our perceptions of nature?
Digital environmental storytelling: The role of narratives in gaming, VR, and other media in fostering ecological awareness.
Climate change in digital spaces: How do virtual environments depict, critique, or influence conversations around climate change and environmental crises?
Virtual nature as a site of activism: How do digital platforms serve as spaces for environmental movements, advocacy, and collective action?
Nature in immersive technologies: Exploring the potential of AR, VR, and gaming to shape ecological consciousness.
Ecocriticism in the digital era: New forms of ecocriticism that engage with digital, virtual, and immersive technologies.
Biofeedback and digital ecosystems: Interactions between humans and digital ecosystems and how they model or simulate biological systems.
We welcome papers from a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to environmental studies, media studies, digital humanities, literature, cultural studies, and philosophy. Submissions should engage with the role of digital technology in both reflecting and shaping our relationship with the natural world.
Types of papers:
original research papers: up to 5,000 – 7,000 words, including references and footnotes
reviews: up to 2,000 words
Submission of research papers and reviews implies that the work described has not been published previously and that its publication is approved by all authors. By submitting an article to [sic], the authors acknowledge that the article is original and entirely the result of work of the author or authors, and that it is not currently being considered for publication by any other journal.
All manuscripts should be submitted by email attachment to sic.journal.contact@gmail.com and the editors of this issue, Suzana Marjanić (suzana@ief.hr) and Goran Đurđević (goran.djurdjevich@gmail.com).
