Orlanda Amarílis (1924 – 2014) was the first Cape Verdean woman writer to publish her work in Portugal. “Sunset” is taken from her debut short-story collection Cais do Sodré té Salamansa, published under the Salazar dictatorship. She would go on to publish two post-colonial collections: Ilhéu de Pássaros (1983) and A Casa dos Mastros (1989).
