Zhu Guangqian

Zhu Guangqian (Chu Kuang-ch’ien, 1897-1986) was a prominent early 20th century Chinese liberal intellectual who is often considered the “father of modern Chinese aesthetics.” He was educated in Europe, translated Hegel’s Aesthetics into Chinese, and was a follower of Benedetto Croce. His best known works include The Psychology of Tragedy, Aesthetic Psychology, and the early masterpiece, On Beauty (in which the essay translated here appears).
